Importance of Disabled Parking Spaces
As the term implies, disabled parking spaces, also termed as handicapped parking lots, are reserved for the wheelchair users. The parking lot splits into two spaces with one specified for the vehicle and another (usually stripped area) for the driver to land their wheelchair through a ramp extending from the car (Lu et al., 2019). The state allows for theses parking lots considering the specific needs of disabled people who need extra space to conveniently and independently get out of their vehicles when parked (Bučar Ručman, 2019). However, due to lack of awareness, mostly these spaces are occupied by non-disabled persons. In some cases, abled-bodied persons deliberately take up these places. In either case, this illegitimate occupation may create inconvenience besides engendering negative psychological implications for the disabled persons seeking the parking space.
The state tends to allow for the dedicated disabled parking spaces as a gesture to make these disadvantaged groups feel included besides it being a strategic measure. The population of a state comprises a diverse range of groups whereas the state has its obligation to each group. Disabled people constitute one of the major groups to which the government has to extend its efforts (Bučar Ručman, 2019).
