The Impact of Abuse on Children and Young People
Children and young people rely on parents and other caregivers to provide love, understanding, support, and safety; however, child abuse violates such trust. When the relationship between children and their caregivers is damaged, children develop different beliefs. Children develop negative attitudes towards adults affecting their capability to establish sustainable relationship throughout their lives. Abused children and young people often experience difficulties forming intimate relationships (McGhee & Francis, 2003). Children display threatening behaviors that might affect their relationship with others. Implications of child abuse include mostly emotional and psychological effects. Even though everyone has the duty to protect children and young people from abuse, agencies, and certain professionals, have the duty according to the legislation to safeguard and protect children from harm (May- Chahal & Coleman, 2003). Accordingly, this essay analyzes the negative consequences of abuse on children and young people and critically analyzes some legislation that mandates agencies like social services, the police, private entities and other professionals in protecting children and young people.
Understanding Child Abuse
Child abuse is the act of parents or caregivers endangering children affecting their physical, psychological, and emotional development. Child abuse usually is a repeated process or one incident that causes negative consequences to children especially when they become adults.
