Introduction
Hard Times by Charles Dickens is a story revolving around the life that people used to live in the Victorian Period. Dickens narrates a story about kids like Tom and Louisa who are brought up as ‘robots,' meaning that they were forbidden from expressing any feelings (1854). For instance, Louisa gets to marry an obnoxious and unpleasant but rich Bounderby, and this ends up to be her trap in life. This paper provides an analysis of how children used to be abused in the Victorian age. The paper hypothesizes that the Victorian age only allowed people to grow up as robots that only do what they are told without questioning how they feel about it.
Abuse of children in the Victorian Period
As Dickens presents in his article, children were never allowed to express their feelings. Hence creativity and imaginations were highly forbidden (1854). At the age of nineteen, Louisa is sold to a senior man who has been secretly wanting to marry her. This is abuse because even after Louisa realizes that she is in love with another, she cannot do anything about it. She even goes ahead to ask her father why he never allowed them to grow naturally with the value of emotions. In some case, this is sexual exploitation because the child was not given an opportunity to decide whether she wanted to be married or not.
