Culture reveals individuals’ values, norms, beliefs, ideologies, assumptions, social, economic, and political structures (Thompson, 2018). Indeed, it significantly influences how team members communicate, their behaviors, and the creation and maintenance of trusting relationships. For instance, countries with a culture of individualism are less likely to emphasize teamwork. When it comes to collectivism, teams’ goals, needs, and values are highly emphasized. However, participative decision-making can lead to self-managed teams by using the concepts of collectivism and individualism. Culture significantly affects motivation.
Masculinity suggests that individuals are more comfortable with labor division, while femininity emphasizes flexible roles and looser boundaries. In the Islamic work ethic, work dedication is a virtue, and proper human relationships are encouraged and emphasized in organizations (Deresky, 2017). When it comes to western managers, they believe that people should learn from their mistakes, while Russian managers punish those who engage in activities erroneously. Multicultural leaders cannot motivate their followers without considering their cultural origins. For example, a reward system for the United States of America (USA) emphasizes professionalism, social status, and financial benefits while Japanese values work permanency, bonuses, and seniority.
