In gentrification, wealthier individuals shift to existing poor urban centers to displace the locals, and during this process, new trading activities and improved housing facilities emerge. Academics have defined gentrification based on changes in class demographics of the locals from low to middle-class (Rucks-Ahidiana, 2021). According to Amanda Boston, the twenty-first century has witnessed the intertwined dynamics of the displacement and destabilization of people of color in major US cities, including New York City. Boston’s assessment of Downtown Brooklyn’s “redevelopment” has exposed the changing roles of the market and government in destabilizing and erasing the long-standing African-American communities (Marron Institute of Urban Management, 2020).
