Playing games allows one to interface and comprehend how to live and experience the virtual world in the play. Players' judgment and views emanate from their experience after playing the game. Despite game contents or design, the user interacts with the computational world, which receives the player's instructions and reacts by changing its status. Thus, the player gets the results based on their experience with the game, and the information they gather forms the foundation for deciding the next course of action (Fabricatore, 2007). Video games should follow the principle that affects one's commitment and contributes to sense-making. Therefore, based on how the games treat these principles, the game can be fun by providing the gamers with a challenge, reward, or mastery that they desire without unwanted difficulties. On the other hand, a game can cause frustration, disappointment, and even negative judgments or conclusions. Therefore, while considering the principles of gaming, this work will discuss examples of a fair game and those that violate the underlying framework, causing disrespect to the player.
Example of a Game that Employs all the Principles to Respect the Player
Battlefield 2042 Video Game
Battlefield 2042 is an ambitious game. It comprises several types of play, has various maps, unique game editing options, and the latest classic gears that provide the user with so much entertainment. While in the "Hazard Zone, a 32-player PvP mode," the gamer fights against AI bots and other players as they coordinate with their teammates to obtain data drives in zones they are contesting. The player in the game gets the reward according to the amount of data they mine. Thus, the gamer satisfies their needs in the game by meeting unchanging objectives and enhancing the play's motivation.
On the other hand, the player loses points or data when they get killed. When this happens, the player is forced to restart the game. Therefore, gaming has a reward and risk element because one can continue to survive to retain their data and receive points. A player can also attack more aggressively and create risky skirmishes to reward more points for killing other players. There is an element of repeated playthroughs at different levels in the game. This enhances one's skill as one continues to achieve their objectives at an even higher level (Neely,2019).
Similarly, as witnessed in the game, a player must influence the outcome of the play through the art of skill and coordination. Failure to exert effort leads to a loss in the game contest. There is punishment in the game, which is often death and loss of accumulated income. These aspects make the game enjoyable because the player tries to avoid them by all means (David Bowman et al., 2021). In addition, the player cannot select whomever they wish at the beginning of a round. Every team can only have one specific type of specialist in the fighting squad.
