Clashes between Man and Society happens every single day. Contrary to the misconception that these clashes include violent and chaotic bouts, the reality is that these conflicts happen almost every single minute and exist both within and outside the individual himself. As highlighted in Freud’s (1989) ‘Civilization and its Discontent’, he discussed how both individual and society exist together like two players in a tug-of-war. Specifically, the individual’s innate desire for freedom has always been balanced by society’s preference over repression of instincts. He also argued that despite the success of society in repressing such innate traits, the prolonged tension between the two creates a perpetual discontent on the part of the individuals. Accordingly, this idea could be viewed in light of the works of other scholars such as Marx and Coates. Thus, the succeeding sections of this paper would be dedicated for the analysis of the solutions that they outline using Freud’s idea.

In the ‘Communist Manifesto’, Marx and Engels (1967), argued that the structure of society and the difference between the poor (proletariat) and the rich (bourgeoisie) is perpetuated by the capitalist system. In this system, the poor are stripped of their freedom and are designed to become ‘docile bodies’ that would help the overall system generate more profit.
