The applicability of coaching skills in real-life situations is very much different from theoretical bits that students acquire in the classroom. Life circumstances offered a vast range of variables that a coach has to deal with and more so, overcome when it comes to offering their clients appropriate solutions. In this regard, emotional intelligence (EQ) came in handy. Counseling, in particular, is a peculiar environment that demands considerable input from the counselor. Eric Parker, an alcoholic addict, calls for an elevated understanding from the counselor so that they can understand the inner state of their client. In the course of his sessions, it came to my realization that he is battling an extreme level of anxiety and depression. These two factors have disabled his ability to overcome the drinking problem. These were realized from his intent to be open in regards to the problem he was experiencing. Moreover, Parker lacked any level of self-discipline and self-control in preventing his urge towards alcohol.
Feedback to these problems was quite necessary. According to Turner (2017), feedback establishes a deep-rooted personal development in a person to the extent that they are motivated to engage with the rules of the structured process. The information thereof would help in establishing both short-term and long-term responses that Parker was facing. Considering that the inner state of an individual is very important, Parker’s emotional and behavioral well-being advocates for the inclusion of actions that promote resiliency within the individual (Gus, Rose, & Gilbert, 2015). In response, Parker was to spend more time with his family to minimize the possible problems that could emanate from this environment. This period would mitigate against any similar times that would go to drinking alcohol. Moreover, it offers him an opportunity to create a stronger bond with his family and friends.
