Introduction
Community policing refers to the collaboration between police and the community in identifying and solving community problems such as crime. Community policing is founded on the notion that police are not the ultimate guardians of law and order. Instead, every member must play an active role in the effort to enhance community safety and the maintenance of quality neighbourhoods. The idea of enhancing the relationship between the police and locals to reduce crime emerged in the 1970s after the realization that the traditional model which assumed that police could manage crime on their own was considered ineffective. In 1994, the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) was launched and has since promoted a system-wide collaboration to address crime challenges. 
Current trends
American communities are first changing and with the family system disintegrating police are now forced to cope with gang activity, drug problems, juvenile delinquency, and increased crime. Current community policing trends seek to have more involved citizens, put more police officers on foot, establish a police officer-directed community outreach, and normalize the use of technology to report crime (Skogan & Hartnett, 2019).
