A 6-year-old develops a high fever accompanied by violent vomiting and convulsions while at school. The child is rushed to a nearby hospital. The attending physician makes a diagnosis of meningitis and requests permission to initiate treatment from the parents. The child’s parents are divorced. The mother, who is not the biological parent of the child, has primary custody. She is a Christian Scientist who insists that no medical treatment be offered for religious reasons. The biological father, who resides in another state, is also contacted. He insists that treatment be given and seeks independent consultation from another physician.
Assignment:
In a formal, written paper of 800-1,200 words, answer the following questions:
What is the ethical dilemma here?
Describe the decision-making model you selected from your readings.
How would you resolve this dilemma using the model?

Introduction
Patient consent is typically known as the one of the vital concerns which are essential to be put into consideration in a regular health care practice. Patient consent and autonomy are important considerations according to the fundamental elements of the holistic approach to nursing. Taking consent for care plan and treatment is vital since it offers the opportunity to enable a patient to make decisions based on a suitable health care plan according to the financial prospect and self-judgment of the patient (Fry and Johnstone, 2008). The concern is more crucial when taking consent for patient experiencing emergency or serious condition. On the similar note, in a situation of childcare, it is more appropriate to consider the consent and decision of parents, a member of the family, or any consent carer. Such a consideration is taken due to the age of a child because normally children are regarded as immature to take a decision concerning their health condition until 18 years old.
Ethical dilemma
Cranmer and Nhemachena (2013) view that based on the case study provided, because of the age factor; getting consent from the parents of the child is necessary for care intervention and treatment plan. It is identified that the child is suffering from meningitis and experiencing convulsion-related symptoms and vomiting. It is, therefore, an important concern to offer treatment and care to address the condition and situation. Moreover, it can be seen the case study is in a dilemma since the parents of the child are separated (divorced) and the parents are also seen holding different spiritual and cultural beliefs. Especially, the mother of the child (though not a biological mother) is a practicing Christian Scientist and holds cultural and religious beliefs that discourage any related medical intervention to be administrated to the child’s condition. On the other side, the father of the child has no problem; he agrees with the use of any specific care plan and medication with the aim of addressing health condition as quickly as possible (Benjamin and Curtis, 2010). Therefore, the ethical dilemma seen is based on how to adopt treatment and care plan for the child that should not only bring relief to the child but also ensure and offer satisfaction to the concerned parents.
Decision-making model
It is, thus, the process of making a decision and offering care assistance to the child that can help to solve the concern, and these are duties, which the nurse can perform. Fry and Johnstone (2008) identify that the application of evidence-based practice and wisdom is, therefore, required to address this issue. The process of making decision depends on how an efficient care plan would be created, which should be made based on the following considerations:
Patient assessment needs to be conducted by interviewing friends, educators, school staffs, and the child himself.
Efficient means of treatment and possible suggestions available depending on the existing workforce and resources of the health care organization should be analyzed and assigned to fix the health issue.
