Patient consent is a vital concern which is mandatory to be put into an account in the ordinary health care practice. The patient consent and autonomy is important according to the principles of the holistic approach (Gastmans, 2013). The concern is more efficient when it is about obtaining consent for a patient with emergency or serious condition. In an issue of childcare, it is more vital to put into consideration of consent and decision of parents or any guardian. This is because of the age factor of children, as they are regarded as still not mature to make decisions about their health conditions until they reach 18 years of age and above. Ethical consideration applies to all developed and developing countries.
Based on this scenario, the consent for the intervention and treatment plan can only be obtained from for the child's parents due to the age factor. The diagnosis was made, and it was identified that the child was suffering from meningitis with serious vomiting and convulsion symptoms. It is, therefore, important to offer treatment and care to control the situation and address the condition. The case was faced with the dilemma because of the religious and cultural differences of the both the parents. Especially, the mother of the child (non-biological mother) is a Christian scientist and because of her spiritual and cultural beliefs, she insisted that medical treatment not to be used to address the child's condition. The father of the child is seen accepting the use of any medical treatment with the aim of resolving health issue as soon as possible. This placed the nurse in dilemma to continue addressing the child's condition. The two different opinions could result in two different outcomes. The ethical dilemma is, therefore, seen based on the treatment approach to be adopted for the child that should not just relieve child's suffering, but also should satisfy the parents' concerns (Brooker and Waugh, 2013). Thus, when intending to make a decision in a case whereby strong emotions are felt, it is vital for the physician to use a decision-making model in developing the most ethical approach to resolving such dilemma.
Therefore, the process of offering care assistance and decision-making to the child is majorly relying on the health practitioner. Evidence-based nursing practice and wisdom are required to be used in the scenario. The decision-making model which is used to address this dilemma is based on the six-step process highlighted by Purtilo and Doherty (2011). The six step process is an organized method that enables analysis and reflection of moral consideration of the situation. The decision-making process aims to create efficient care plan that should be made based on the following considerations:
Patient assessment should be conducted in line with the interrogation of friends, teachers, school staff, and the child himself (if possible).
Important suggestions and treatment approaches should be created and evaluated depending on the availability of the existing resources and health care professionals to be used to solve the issue.
An immediate discussion involving senior physicians, nurses, and other important health care expe...
