1. Double consciousness refers to the internal dispute experienced by subordinate groups in an oppressional society. It initially referenced the psychological challenge of often looking at the self via the eyes of a racist white society. People always feel their twoness, a Negro, an American; two unreconciled strivings, two thoughts, two souls; and so on. For instance, Du Bois tried to reconcile his African heritage with European society where he was brought up (Wamba, 1999). This theory cannot be separated from gender. For instance, it is significantly present for female diaspora artists as they are challenged to remain authentic to their origin whereas branding themselves in a manner to realize mainstream and international popularity. Women musicians who are black are always face stereotyping as being aggressive and hyper-sexual which may either assist their brands or hurt their branding as well as the identity they have created. Because of this, they are coerced to privilege specific self-makers and veil others based on the circumstance. This always makes them feel that they cannot create an identity for oneself but must alter based on the situation. Durkheim’s take on double consciousness is that it affects all people from all races irrespective of their skins’ color.

Manifest functions are consciously and deliberately done to benefit people whereas latent functions are unconsciously and unintentionally done to benefit people. Manifest functions are the results that individuals observed and expected and are comprehended by those in the activity while latent ones are unrecognized and unintended (Merton, 1957).
