Depression Among Teenagers in New York
Depression is a comprehensive mental health disorder that so many contributors characterize. It runs across all ages, from children to the elderly. Medically, the term depression refers to one severe feeling of misery, a feeling of melancholy where one no longer believes in them. In this state of mind, the victim occasionally will have suicidal thoughts, indulge in alcohol, or lose focus in life (Mustafa et al., 2014). When the root cause of depression is not handled amicably, it can lead to catastrophic occurrences. Across all the age groups, teenagers are the most affected victims of depression. Due to their dynamic nature, the desire to explore more and their ever-changing hormones occasionally lead to circumstances where they get stressed.
Relevance of the Topic
Being a resident of New York City for the longest time, I have always felt something is not okay with most teenagers in the city. I would always see so many teenagers living on the streets, which informed my choice of the topic. Occasionally, I would walk by the roads and many times say hi to the teenagers hoping that someday someone would answer and I could ask questions.
Fortunately, that day did come, and I asked why they were in the street. The first victim I came across was a teenage mother of one. She explained to me that having given birth at her age, she had to experience rejection from her parents, which drove her to the streets. She thought going into the streets would provide her with some solace, but instead, she ended up doing drugs and alcohol that negatively changed her life. Due to my curiosity, I had to engage her in a lengthy interrogation to know why other teenagers were living on the streets. She stated that many of the youngsters on the roads have many mental issues, but the number one is depression. Listening to her and familiarizing myself with this mental disorder, I got so touched. I decided to pursue a course that will help me bring a positive change to the lives of the depressed; therefore, I decided to major in counseling, my profession.
Target Population
The target population for this research includes forty teenagers and twenty adults selected randomly. I choose to involve adults since listening to both sides of the story will help me decide for my research. Since my target population is small and is within the streets of New York City, I intend to do a personal interview to gather the required information. I plan to have a one-on-one interview with each of the forty teenagers I had randomly selected. Creating a good rapport with the streets teenagers shall make it easy for them to direct me to their homes, and this is where I intend to get some of the twenty adults to interview.
Identified Problem
