The debate in the video brings to light key arguments against and favor of the ruling in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. The case, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, is quite significant in the present day because, as revealed in the debate, there has been a surge of lawsuits against the press for defamation (C-Span, 2019). The increase in lawsuits means that more and more people seem to challenge the Sullivan ruling. The case is also relevant because President Trump sought to make it easier to sue the media (Wilkie, 2018). The increase in the number of libel cases and the insistence of an influential public figure like President Trump make New York Times Co. v. Sullivan extremely significant today.
