Air pollution is a critical environmental threat to a person’s health. Contact with air pollutants within the environment is associated with premature mortalities, heart problems, respiratory diseases, and cancer. Air pollution constitutes one of the most significant public health problems in New York City (HealthyPeople.gov, 2020). Urban development processes in New York City result in the heightening urban heat island (UHI) intensity that exacerbates climate change ramifications. The UHI is the change in thermal equilibrium within urban environment compared to the adjacent rural contexts due to heat alterations and momentum shifts between the atmosphere and the built surfaces in terms of temperature storage, segmentation between latent and sensible temperature fluxes, frictional drag, as well as the ratio between anthropogenic and natural emissions (Ulpiani, 2020). The UHI effect has adverse implications on life quality in New York City, thus prompting the need for mitigation strategies such as the use of vegetation in urban spaces.
