Question: How do the many socioemotional changes of adolescence impact family systems? Respond to the question theoretically and then provide a minimum of two examples, without sharing names if they are personally known to you.
Jasmine
The socioemotional changes are associated with the search for identity, and this is influenced by the surroundings and the gander. The family system has a positive influence on their ability to cope with the changes, especially when there is socioemotional functioning (Ciarrochi, Heaven, & Supavadeeprasit, 2013). For instance, an adolescent seeking more independence and this influences how they relate to the family members and form relationships At other times, the adolescents take unnecessary risks where there are new experiences as they seek to exercise their independence.
Jenny
Adolescents commit to an identity that is based on their past experiences, but also look up to their peers. If their peers choose certain clothes and behave in certain ways they are more likely to do the same. The hormonal changes may influence their outlook in life, but the parents maybe apprehensive about these changes when they see their adolescent children seeking more autonomy. For instance, adolescent who suddenly grow the interest of moving away from their parents seek autonomy and independence away from the rules and constant monitoring by the family members especially the parents. At other times, the adolescents are immersed in their own world including violent videogames that seem more exciting (Olson, Kutner, & Warner, 2008).
Kimberly
As adolescents change physically, emotionally and psychologically, they are more conscious how other people treat and perceive them. Family support is crucial to using positive coping strategies when the adolescents face changes. Adolescents from broken homes and those living in socialized disorganized neighborhoods are less likely to receive family support. Good parent-child communication and family support not only improve the self-esteem of adolescents, but also reduces the suicide risk behaviors (Sharaf, Thompson & Waalsh, 2009)
