Gender stereotypes are socially constructed, and both boys and girls adopt their social identity based on what is deemed appropriate. In my earlier experiences the mode of dressing, appearance, leisure activities and social interaction defined many gender stereotypes. Girls tended to wear brightly colored clothes, but less attention was placed on the appearance of boys. Even when boys got into physical altercations they are somehow excused as boys being boys. Even though, being assertive was positively viewed by the boys being aggressive was equated as being assertive, but there was no clarity how girls were to behave to be more assertive.
According to Endendijk et al (2013) fathers are more likely to have explicit gender stereotypes, but mothers are more likely to have implicit stereotypes. Gender stereotypes have loosened over time, especially with women increasingly being working mothers.
