We have all heard about the girl who wants to join the wrestling team and the boy who wants an Easy Bake Oven. Think about some of your earliest experiences with gender. Consider at school, extracurricular activities, your parents, your friends, etc. Discuss gender roles, stereotypes, myths, and/or controls in society that existed then and you see exist today. Do you feel that males or females have more or less “controls” placed on them by society? Is it fair? Do you believe that boys and girls/men and women should stick to the qualities, interests, etc., that society deems appropriate for their gender?

Gender stereotypes are socially constructed, and both boys and girls adopt their social identity based on what is deemed appropriate. In my earlier experiences the mode of dressing, appearance, leisure activities and social interaction defined many gender stereotypes. Girls tended to wear brightly colored clothes, but less attention was placed on the appearance of boys. Even when boys got into physical altercations they are somehow excused as boys being boys. Even though, being assertive was positively viewed by the boys being aggressive was equated as being assertive, but there was no clarity how girls were to behave to be more assertive.
According to Endendijk et al (2013) fathers are more likely to have explicit gender stereotypes, but mothers are more likely to have implicit stereotypes. Gender stereotypes have loosened over time, especially with women increasingly being working mothers. There is less control placed on women, but since women are expected to nurture children there are more controls placed on them compared to men. W...
