Terrorism has always been defined as unlawful use of force or violence against the target to intimidate or coerce a government and its citizens in order to satisfy specific political, social, religious, or ideological objectives. These acts are carried out by radical groups or terrorists who justify their bloody actions based on perceived social, economic, or political unfairness. The most renowned groups that have conducted the deadliest attacks around the world include the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Al-Qaeda, Al-Shabaab, Boko Haram, and the Taliban. The United States is one of the countries that have suffered major blows in the hands of terrorists, with the deadliest attack being 9/11 that left more than 3000 fatalities and thousands of injuries.
Characteristics of Terrorism
One of the characteristics of terrorism will be the use of violence or threats. As seen from terrorist activities conducted around the world, terrorists believe in violence and threats as a way of pursuing their goals. This feature can take any behavioral form that creates a climate of fear and danger in the human psyche. Research about terrorism in the U.S. and around the world indicates that the extremist groups always advocate for violence and are not open to peaceful negotiation (Homolar & A. Rodríguez-Merino, 2019). Violence is what defines them.
Another characteristic will be the motive. In most cases, when terrorism occurs, there has to be a motive for the action. That is why terror groups often claim responsibility for an attack. To some extent, they cite the motives to let the government know the cause of their radicalization. For instance, when Al-Qaeda attacked the U.S. in the coordinated 9/11 attacks, they cited the U.S. support of Israel, the presence of the U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, and Iraqi sanctions as motives.
Another characteristic will be the intention to spread fear by committing spectacular public acts (Homolar & A. Rodríguez-Merino, 2019). As noted, the primary objective of terrorists is to intimidate the government by threatening or killing innocent people. They can give the government an ultimatum to do what they want or continue with their mission. These groups do not care about humanity so long as they achieve their objectives that range from social to political, ideological, and religious motives.
