Trauma and recovery are two concepts that are often neglected despite being seen in our everyday life. This is related to the past and present experiences that define an individual while considering the impact of their mental health. The recovery process is often gradual, and the person might never fully recover from the aftermath of the traumatic experiences. Trauma and recovery have specific features, which are strengthened by ineffability.
Judith Lewis Herman wrote about trauma and recovery based on the differences in the individual’s experience, ranging from domestic violence to political abuse. It was stated that “Psychological trauma is the affliction of the powerless” (Herman 33).
Traumatic events can be inflicted either naturally or voluntarily and involuntarily by humans. An example of natural traumas is natural disasters that leave many people fearing being injured or dying. Voluntary traumas inflicted by humans can be due to physical violence such as harassment or oppression. Lastly, involuntary traumas are unintentional but result in a significant deviation of a person’s everyday functioning, such as taking them by surprise. Nevertheless, these snatch the person’s ability to control variables and surroundings (Herman 33-34). Therefore, these experiences are deemed “…extraordinary, not because they occur rarely, but because they overwhelm ordinary human adaptations to life.” (Herman 33).
Trauma provides mixed emotions and disturbs the person’s consciousness, such that many, if not all, try to escape from reality. This prevents them from speaking about their fears and concerns, entrapping them into a black hole where they could never escape anymore. Not ev...
