Introduction
When was America great? This is a subjective question, but the post-war period of 1945 to 1965 stands out in American history. After the war, the United States consolidated its position as the most influential country in the world. This is mainly attributed to rapid industrial growth, major technological advancements, and better living conditions that existed during that period. Consequently, this essay aims at describing why America was great between 1945 to 1965.
Industrial growth
In 1940, the U.S gross national product was $200 thousand million. However, by 1960, the GDP had jumped to $500 thousand million. A major contributor to this boom was the number of automobiles products, which quadrupled between 1945 to 1956 (Chowdhury, 2018). The real estate industry also developed rapidly as affordable mortgages for returning military men were established. Additionally, America witnessed a new pattern of large business corporations purchasing shares in other businesses. For instance, International Telephone and Telegraph bought shares in Hartford Fire Insurance and Sheraton Hotels. Such corporations experienced growth to the extent that they began developing holdings in foreign countries. In terms of agriculture, gains in productivity transformed small farms into commercial plantations. The Highway Act of 1956 set aside a massive $26 thousand million for road construction around the country (Holt, 2014). Therefore, agricultural products easily reached the intended market as transportation was swift.
