William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, have placed most of its characters in a very complex relationship throughout the entire play. The writer highlights sense of love and emotions and person’s desire as madness which puts the Audience in a position to question the sanity of various characters throughout the play. When hamlet decides to carry out the revenge. People around him question his sanity due to expression of his emotion. Additionally, people around him including Ophelia and Claudius show madness in different forms (William, S. 2017). Therefore, the writer have used the word madness to represent emotions and peoples’ expression toward various experiences. Complex relationships are evident throughout the play including that of Hamlet and Ophelia and the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy in The Great Gatsby. This paper will compare relationships indicating complexity throughout the two contexts.
The relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia can fall in the category of ugly love because it keeps the audience in a difficult position to tell whether the relationship was real or not. Additionally, audiences may highlight this as a controversial love because both Ophelia and Hamlet do not highlight their ultimate decision. The play indicates that Hamlet had faced relationship issues before and a very rough figure of women due to his experience with other people’s relationship. Hamlets Mother’s relationship was not perfect. She remarried to his uncle later after death of Hamlets father (William, S. 2017). Such past experience promoted a complicated relationship because Hamlet could not show Ophelia the love.
Hamlet and Ophelia relationship was complicated and many situations promoted further complications. For instance, Ophelia’s father disapproved her request which made her relationship with Hamlet to become more complicated. Besides, Hamlets past experience with his mother’s relationship discouraged him to an extent of straining in showing love to Ophelia. This is because Hamlet was mentally unsatisfied to be in relationships. Additionally, Hamlet viewed women as a whole and not as per individual. This made him believe that all women are same thus promoting an ugly relationship between him and Ophelia.
The relationship between Daisy and Gatsby ends up in a complicated manner. Gatsby left Daisy to serve his duties for other crucial tasks after First World War.
