The Role of Religion in Presidential Elections in the U.S.
Within the American democracy, churches have developed into powerful political entities. However, I have never believed that politicians value religion. Politicians must have borrowed from the popular advice by Nicola Machiavelli to the prince on using religion as a tool and never being religious. The churches have also coordinated voter registration efforts, handed out voter guides, and articulated the church's position on impending political matters and elections. Of course, churches are free to promote the preference of one candidate over another among their members. The focus on Christian churches in this paper is not only due to the high percentage of Christians in America but also because some voters and lawmakers who frequently bring up religious convictions when discussing policy choices or potential legislation believe that Christianity is a desirable quality in candidates. More than other major religions, Christianity has a distinctive impact on our political system.
Church involvement in politics and the political process makes it understandable why voters value a candidate's religious views so highly. Finding a job where a candidate's religious affiliation is required to get employed is frequently challenging in America.
