Reflection Paper: Religious Family Tree – DUE Saturday, August 8, 2015
Each of you will write a personal essay on the religious history of YOUR family. You should use this opportunity to speak to parents, grandparents or other relatives about the religious and/or non-religious perspectives of the family. In the future, this "oral history" may become precious knowledge. (Note: This paper is not to focus on your personal beliefs, but rather the religious and cultural perspectives of the last three generations or more of your family.
Your paper should be well organized and should answer such questions as the following: Where did we come from? What was the religious background of my grandparents on both sides? What has been the religion of my parents? Is there more than one religious tradition? If so, what has that meant to us? Have family members changed their affiliation or practice? How does one generation – even in the same tradition – differ from another? How have our religion(s) formed our lives – or not? How do I see myself/my family in the religious landscape of America/New York? Do I want to CONTINUE or discontinue the religious traditions of my family?
The paper should focus on the religious perspectives of various members of your family. The paper should not focus on what your family does on Christmas day or during Ramadan.
The paper should not offer general information about your religion. The paper should result from actual conversations between you and your family members about the various religious perspectives within the family across several generations.
In response to that age-old question of "How long does it have to be?" I will use the words of Abraham Lincoln, when he was asked how long a man's legs should be. He responded "Long enough to reach the ground." All of your reflection papers should be long enough to carry the body of the material, no more, no less. Define your topic (this does not mean repeating the question verbatim), establish your "argument" - meaning get to the HEART of the matter, rebut any objections (which may or may not exist), and bring it to a conclusion. Do the best job that you can.
While I will not be counting the number or pages or words you submit, I will be looking for how clearly and succinctly you can respond to the questions posed. I will be asking myself, does he or she get right to the point? Are the main ideas of the topic ADDRESSED directly?
All margins must be one inch. The font must be 12 point, Times New Roman. The paper must be double-spaced and pages numbered. All of the aforementioned should be integrated into every paper you write for this class. There is no need to use any outside sources from the Internet on the paper. You may not resubmit any part of an assignment that has been previously SUBMITTED for another class. Your paper should have a 0% similarity classification from TurnItIn. Remember to proofread!

Religious Family Tree
Our father family history is infiltrated by a lot of issues that define who we currently are and where we belong. My grandfathers are the first immigrants in the United States of America from Pakistan and are believed to have arrived in America in search of greener pastures. However, there were some political, religious, and economic situations that also instigated their migration into the United States of America.
My family can be traced from the province of Punjab with Punjabi, Urdu, and English as our spoken languages who moved from Pakistan in 1907 and settled on the west coast of the United States. My grandfather alleges that they worked in agricultural fields and the construction industry for a period before turning into traders and merchants.
He mentions that they assimilated the Western culture of dressing though they refused to cut their hairs for the wearing of turbans as their religion required. As stated by my grandfather, they were soon known as Asian Indians. They also continued to speak Punjabi, especially during their religious functions. During this period, they began purchasing land even after legislations were passed barring them from this act. This factor saw their increase in population, a factor that made them gain citizenship in the country.
My grandparent's religious backgrounds are that of the Buddhist and were followers of Gautama Buddha. They mainly believed in the doctrine of ahimsa, in other words, nonviolence. Their belief systems caused them to practice vegetarianism since they were not allowed to kill even animals. It also essential to note that they also practiced polytheism sine they believed in multiple deities. These deities were usually assumed to be goddesses and gods and had some religious rituals that were to be observed and adhered to strictly.
It is, therefore, important to mention that our grandparent's religious affiliations have hugely impacted the manner in which we view the deities. In this society that is infiltrated by reason and logic, me, and my siblings have had struggles accepting the element of polytheism. In as much as it is difficult from our grandparent's religious affiliations and beliefs, the truth that boils down to us that the element of polytheism has no ground that holds it and cannot be justified in light of religion.
Some of our family members have changed their religious affiliations and practice since our entry into schools with some turning to Christianity while other entirely believing in the nonexistence of the spiritual being. There are factors that had contributed to this, especially considering the fact that when we entered adulthood, we came to discover some of the things were not aware of, a factor t...
