The American civil war was triggered by a conflict of interests between the southern states and the northern states. The northern states wanted a united country with no slavery where all people were granted equal rights. On the other hand, the southern states did not want slavery to be abolished as slaves were used in these states as sources of labor (civilwar.org, 2015). During this period, Abraham Lincoln was the president of the United States of America.
