Finding One's Spirituality within Life Dance
Introduction
The search for spirituality is considered a personal quest. Sometimes, spirituality is likened to dancing, smuggling, or wrestling. Some of the incidents in life encourage us to be more spiritual. Further, our life in their world indicates the cosmic dance animated by the life-giving breath of the Spirit. I understand that the devil wants to steal and destroy any step I have made toward my search for spirituality. Knowing this part of my spiritual journey is important because it will assist in overcoming temptations and remaining steadfast. Just like Thomas Merton stated, the joy of the cosmic dance is always there, and we are in the midst of it, for its beats in our blood whether we want it or not.
Themes
1 Metaphors used for the search for spirituality
On page 78, King states that spirituality is normally likened to dancing, struggling, and even wrestling. This means that if we want to be stronger spiritually, we must struggle to be there. We must overcome many challenges because, just like wrestling, one has to put in a lot of effort to remain victorious. Any dance is usually accompanied by rhythms and changing beats, making it more dynamic. On page 79, King states that we enjoy each other's company when we are dancing and grow closer emotionally and physically. This is the same thing that happens in our search for spirituality. The dance of life involves our whole being, the body, soul, and mind. This means that it is linked with the dance of the Spirit. On page 28, Fischer notes that a goal should govern every journey we make as Christians. Since I want to grow spiritually, I must have a goal. Growing spiritually is an example of some of the decisions and choices we make for ourselves. When we open ourselves to the divine presence, we get the ability to conquer any situation. For example, in a world where hatred is everywhere, we can imagine how peace can prevail and work towards attaining it. In places where conflicts are rampant, we can break these patterns, ask people to forgive, and live in peace. Forgiveness is important if a person wants to grow spiritually. Further, in a history of family violence, pain, and abuse, we can always choose to stop these things and believe we are capable of love and care.
2 Finding God's will
As human beings, we all want to know the will of God when handling specific issues. For example, when we want to marry or move to a new neighborhood, we want to know if God wants to be in that situation. Discerning God's specific will in our lives is communicating with Him in prayer and discovering how His will has prevailed in our lives. I have learned that it is important to make a connection with God. For example, in Ephesians 1st, the scripture says, "we know that God's ultimate purpose is to unite all things in Christ." However, we fail to understand his will in our lives as human beings.
On page 31, Fischer states that many Christians believe that God has a predetermined and a complete plan for our lives which we must discover and carry out if we are to find salvation and happiness (Fischer, 1990). Several times, I have f...
