1. Describe your understanding of social dance based on what you have read and watched thus far in Week 8, Part 1 - Intro to Social/Popular dance forms in America. Social dance entails different forms like the quadrille, the lancers, the polka, the waltz, assorted country dances, and the reel. From a historical context, it emerged when Christopher Columbus was welcomed in North America. However, social dance was usually performed in communal events such as weddings. It offered a parallel of cultural, economic, and social traditions during each development period of America. My experience was a salsa dance with my cousin at a family party marked by incredible moves smiles, and I danced my heart out of it. Social dancing is part of my cultural heritage, given that all members of the community practice it. International rhumba is non-social because it requires more space, while salsa is social since it is compact.
