Write about a couple of the videos you watched (select TWO videos and/or dance styles to write about specifically). How do you think the social, political, economical and cultural circumstances of the time influenced these dances? What about the music? How are you seeing a connection between the movement that was created and the music that was popular?
2. Identify one political event or sociopolitical circumstance that occurred during the late 1800's to early 1900's in America based on what you learned from the readings. How and why did this event influence the social dance customs of the time?
3. After reading "The Movement of Ragtime" chapter in the article, Race Relations in Ragtime, do you agree with the author regarding the topic of whether the Castles (male and female dance duo) were appropriating African-American dance forms and movements for their own benefit? The author argues that the couple were players in a cyclical development of Ragtime dances, and therefore their removal of African-American styles from the dance was okay because the Castles created their own version. Since dancing styles are tied to political, social, and culture, therefore, corresponding to the changing world, dancing styles are also changing. The 1950s dance was decent compared to today's provocative dancing styles. Economic aspects have greatly influenced technological elements, thus resulting in new dancing styles.
