Vernacular Jazz dance is a broad name covering an extensive list of dances originating from the African American community. Swing dancing is also another overall name and certainly an aspect of it. Vernacular jazz dance can involve a partner or solo dancing. It is viewed as dances that contain African American practices and patterns included in jazz music from the end of the 1800s to the present day. The dances comprise tap, lindy hop, black bottom, and cakewalk.
Tap dance was largely influenced by the merge of African and Irish American dance varieties at the start of the 19th century. Slaves turned to percussive dancing to portray themselves and conserve their cultural status. Merged with British Isles dancing, these forms of dance created a rare pattern and rhythm.
