Despite its significance, the conceptual handling of entrepreneurial autonomy has been relatively shallow. The concept of autonomy has generally been associated with influence and freedom. Researchers have also attached control, flexibility, and responsibility to the concept of autonomy. Entrepreneurs desire autonomy at two levels with the first being the intrinsic enjoyment of making decisions freely in respect to when and how to make a venture. The second level involves three motives that necessarily make autonomy instrumental or a prerequisite. These include freedom from constraints as presented by rules, self-endorsement, and exercise of control (Van-Gledren, et al. 2019). Arguably, autonomy does not come automatically and is faced with numerous challenges such as working long hours or adhering to customers' expectations.
