What are its Major Episodes and Movements?
The Bible is a book about God, human beings, and the relationship between God and humankind. Most parts of the Bible highlight the divine attempt to restore the broken relationship between God and human beings. Because the Bible narrates God’s various attempts to redeem or save his people, its main story has rightly been referred to as salvation history. Witherington (2015, p.13) notes that the Bible primarily tells the story of God’s people from creation to fall, to various acts of redemption, to the coming of the redeemer, to the return of Jesus Christ, the final judgment, and finally to new creation. These themes give the big picture of the entire Bible and are the great episodes and movements that make up the Bible. These episodes and movements are covered in the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament covers the stories of the creation and fall of humankind. It also outlines various acts of redemption, restoration, and other prophecies, such as the coming of the Messiah. The New Testament focuses on the coming of the redeemer, the return of Jesus Christ, final judgments, and the new creation.
How do the Various Genres of the Bible Fit into these Episodes and Movements?
The various genres of the Bible include history or narrative, law, wisdom, poetry, prophecy, gospel, epistle, apocalyptic and religious text (Witherington, 2015). These genres fit into the above episodes and movements by describing their contexts. For example, history books tell the story of the creation and fall of humankind as well as the relationship between God and humanity. Most of these stories appear in Genesis, which is part of the history books. Gospel tells the story of Jesus Christ, including the redeemer's coming and the Messiah's return.
