Falls are a Critical Issue Due to their Financial Impact
Introduction
The paper analyzes two qualitative studies. The nursing practice problem is falls which are common among elderly patients. The major reason for the increased falls among elderly patients is weak body systems. Fall is not only a clinical problem but also a global issue, with more than 684,000 recorded annually. However, not all the elderly are impacted by the problem but those above 60 years. It leads to increased premature death and DALYs. Falls are a critical issue due to their financial impact. Most patients and their families use huge capital to address the issue, adversely impacting those living below the poverty line. The major factors influencing falls include physical changes and sensory problems. Falls are also influenced by gender, where women are identified as victims. Therefore, falls contribute to a major nursing problem that requires timely intervention and appropriate strategy to restore patients' health. The paper analyzes two qualitative articles that will be used to answer the PICOT question.
The PICOT question is, ‘Does patient education in elderly patients on fall prevention decrease falls with injuries per 1000 patient days over six months?’
Background of Studies
The article by Radecki et al. (2018) establishes the study on the increased rate of falls. The study aimed to understand fall prevention strategies from patients' perspectives. The key objective is to reduce falls among the inpatients (Radecki et al., 2018). The article's research question is, what are the key strategies to reduce falls in an acute care setting? The study is significant to nursing practice since it establishes a better ground for preventing falls based on the patient's perspective.
The article by Pettersson et al. (2021) is based on the increased falls among older patients and how to prevent them using a digital approach. It integrates the behavioral changes due to digital prevention programs and patient education. The research question is, what is the effectiveness of using digital fall prevention? The purpose is to understand self-expressions of digital fall prevention, and the objective is to reduce time and enhance effectiveness in managing falls through digital means (Pettersson et al., 2021). The impact on the nursing practice is promoting digitalization in fall prevention which most people are not competent with.
Articles and the Nursing Practice Problem
The article by Radecki et al. (2018) will be used to answer the PICOT question by determining the effective strategy for inpatient fall prevention, such as patient education. Besides, the data is from the patient's perspectives and will make it easy to understand which methods suit them the best. The intervention suggested by the article is similar to PICOT since it suggests patient education. Lastly, the article also focuses on the elderly, similar to PICOT.
