Gender and Transgender
Transgender is a term that describes people whose gender identity conflicts with that which they were assigned at birth. Their gender expression is different from what is considered normal in society. Transgender people may fall into heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, and more (Jiloha, 2019). Some people who fall under this group may undergo medical procedures and hormonal therapy to help them transition to another identity. They may express their desired gender identities through their behavior, mannerisms, and way of dressing (Jiloha, 2019). Other words used to describe Trans males and Tran’s females include queer, gender fluid, LGBTQ, gay, and lesbian. Transgender people are diverse in their identities, and they believe that gender orientation should not only fall under male and female.
Several studies have been done on transgender origination and essence. A study from glad reported that 80% of all Americans are not personally familiar with a transgender individual (Jiloha, 2019). Most information about this gender identity does not originate from Tran’s males and Trans females but rather from media sources. Such outside sources could be prone to inaccurate information about who transgender individuals are and what their lives are all about.
The history of Tran’s representation on-screen dates back to the 20th century. Screens disqualified the presence and experiences of transgender creatives from making films that are inclusive of the transgender community. African-Americans were considered more masculine compared to whites. The black community from Texas played a significant role for the African-American transgender people in film and screens. The black transgender people organized liberation movements that attracted many people in support of human rights.
