Video Reflection: Race and Ethnicity

The most interesting thing I learned from the videos is the modern distinction between race and ethnicity. Today, the race is used to describe individuals who have similar facial characteristics. However, ethnicity is used to describe one’s background. For instance, in the TED Talk video, Anish Shroff identifies himself as Indian by ethnicity. However, years before Europeans moved to modern-day America, Shroff would not have had to identify by his ethnic background because all the people surrounding the caucus regions were viewed as white.
What surprised me from the videos is how fast our definitions of race have changed. According to Crash Course Sociology #34, Europeans, middle-easterners, and even Indians identified themselves as white years ago. This...
