Psych 458 –Summer I 2020
The goal of this paper is to apply the theories we have been considering in class to an actual adolescent experience or set of experiences from your life. Students should select an event that they remember well, that they find interesting, and that they have understood more clearly after having read and reflected on the numerous theories and perspectives of contemporary scholars reviewed in this course. Students should use care in applying the theories to their experience, diligently relating the components of the theories to actual events and intelligently discussing the ways in which the theoretical interpretations reframe their experiences. For the final section of the paper, students are encouraged to step back and critique the theoretical interpretations they have just completed, by considering and critiquing the possible problems with their chosen theory: i.e., what it mistakes about the experience, what it gets wrong, what it overlooks, why it might only apply in certain circumstances, why it makes sense only with regard to boys and not girls, etc.
Section I. Write a description of one significant or salient experience (or a series of related experiences) from your own adolescence. For example, you might choose to describe the experience with your first boy/girlfriend, your transition from elementary school into middle school, or your experience with puberty. If you are uncomfortable writing about your own adolescence, you may describe the experiences of a close friend or family member.
Section IIA & B. Then, choose one theory or perspective from Psych 458 course material and class readings (e.g., Sullivan’s Interpersonal Theory of Adolescent Development). First, describe the components of the perspective (Section IIa). Second, use these components to interpret your experience (Section IIb).
Section III. Critique the theory/perspective in relation to your own experience. In other words, in relation to your own adolescent experience, do you agree or disagree with the perspectives? Why or why not?
Summary of the Assignment. Each paper should include (1) a introduction that describes the adolescent experience, and explicitly states your thesis statement (What theory are you examining in relation to your experience and WHY; e.g., “I think that my experience can be explained by Pipher’s perspective on culture and preadolescent girls); (2) a section that first describes one perspective and then relates the major components of the perspective to your experience; and (3) a critical evaluation of the perspective.
Note: This paper is designed to help students relate their own experiences during adolescence to the material presented in class. This paper is not meant to coerce you to report on any life experience that you wish to remain confidential. Students are invited to consult with the instructor if they are having a hard time choosing an experience or relating it to a theory. Students must have their paper topics approved by June 19th (please send me an email of your chosen experience and perspective). The paper should be approximately 6-8 pages, typed, double-spaced, with any references cited in the American Psychological Association format.

Introduction
As we grow older, things unfold in different ways. What we grew up admiring can turn out to be something that we hate or we may end up confirming our love and admiration for it. For me, life continues to be different than what I anticipated. The things I thought I could enjoy are turning out to be things I abhor because of the uncertainties that surround such issues. One particular experience that will forever leave a sour taste in my mouth involves a relationship that I was in. Growing up, I fantasized about my relationship and how rosy it would be. I would picture myself with my significant other in ways that would leave those around jealous. As a kid, one grows up protected by their parents, and therefore, it is difficult to see how cruel people can be or how bad it can get especially in relationships. For me, all the good things I had in mind were tarnished by a relationship that left me dejected and depressed. My ideas of love and being in love were completely distorted and I felt an emptiness that was unfathomable when my heart was broken. Depression was my destination as my belief system was shattered because of being in a bad relationship. I was not valued and somehow this never occurred to me. I was blinded by my quest to find love and I believe my lack of realization that I was in a bad relationship or my insistence on staying in the relationship was a result of my fear of being alone.
Aside from the experience above, there is also the issue of Covid-19 or the infamous coronavirus that continues to terrify the world. The CDC (2020) notes that in the event of a pandemic, it is normal for people to be anxious and to live in fear because of the uncertainties that exist. People do not know what will happen or whether they are safe or whether their family members will be safe. Those who were in other countries have been trapped there although countries did try to get their citizens back. The measures that have been adopted in the case of Covid-19 have also been a contributing factor to the rising cases of anxiety and stress in the populous. For me, social distancing has been quite difficult because it induces feelings of isolation which leads to loneliness and instances of anxiety. Like everybody else, I have been anxious during this period because I am not sure whether I will survive or whether my family will survive. With deaths now at more than 500,000 people, no one feels safe or can say they are confident in the measures being instituted. Face to face interactions are discouraged and we are asked to stay indoors for fear of being infected. These changes to our daily lives are quite difficult to adjust to. With the realities of doing things at home and lacking physical contact with my closest friends and as well as some family members, instances of depression continue to showcase themselves.
These experiences have helped me appreciate interpersonal interactions which we took for granted before. I believe that Sullivan’s Interpersonal Theory helps to capture and elucidate on both experiences as he touches on how our needs are met through interpersonal interactions.
