Identical Strangers”
Introduction
The research conducted by Dr. Neubauer in the documentary, “Three Identical Strangers” is filled with unethical practices by the adoption agency, Dr. Neubauer himself and some professionals from the CDC. The experiment denied the kids the pleasure of growing up with their siblings which the film insights us had future implications on the triplets. The movie also hints that each of the three siblings suffered mental problems during their teenage years. According to the families’ the triplets suffered from separation anxiety brought about by their separation after spending nine months in the same womb and six months in the same crib before they were adopted. Further, the triplets were also misled into thinking they did not have brothers. This is gravely unethical behavior which should not be tolerated. This paper discusses the implications of the unethical behavior experienced by the three brothers drawing from various readings.
Background
The film, “Three Identical Strangers” is the enthralling tale of a set of triplets who were separated at birth, in 1961, and adopted out to different families who had no idea that the babies they were taking had two identical twins. However, 19 years later, they somewhat miraculously find each other and quickly like each other. Their reunion is quite heartening as scenes of the brothers falling in love with each other while marveling at their similarities despite the 19 year separation. Drama soon ensues as the young men start drinking excessively at the trough of fame. They start a restaurant, named triplets, which kicks off well but starts exerting pressures on the three triplets. All three marry. One commits suicide.
With time their families became aware that the adoption agency had not told the whole truth about the babies they had chosen. After some research, they realized that the separation was part of a scientific research on the issue of nature vs nurture. The kids had been adopted out to families of varying economic classes. One was sent to a wealthy family, another to a middle class family and the other to a blue collar family. Their growth was closely monitored and they were repeatedly tested by agency officials who passed-off their frequent visits to the families’ homes as standard operating procedures. Further research showed that the research also involved several sets of twins who were also adopted out in the same manner. Some of the twins eventually reunited while others did not. The research was conducted by Dr. Peter Neubauer, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at NYU, former secretary general of the International Association of Child Psychiatry and Allied Professions, and former president of the Association for Child Psychoanalysis.
