Colorism and Social Stratification
Skin color and colorism are highly associated with status in most parts of the world. This explains why the industry for manufacturing skin whitening products has grown over the years. A substantial number of people believe that being white enables them to exploit opportunities in life. Therefore, they are willing to do anything to attain skin color. Some cosmetic products are costly, but people are willing to buy them (Dixon & Telles, 2017). Such indicates the extent to which people value skin color because they are willing to trade it for anything. The other reason why the industry is growing is the issue of racism. I believe that racisms affect people in different parts of the world. People with dark skin are more prone to racism, and therefore, most of them whiten their skin color to avoid being discriminated against. An example is when an individual fails to get a certain job due to their skin color. Such discrimination would push them into bleaching their skin to fit in a society when colorism and skin color matters most.
According to the article, western communities are highly associated with racial discrimination, color stratification, and preferences trace back to the civil rights movement (Dixon & Telles, 2017). Income, educational outcome, and housing are the key aspects related to colorism.
