One of the things I found interesting in the Secrets of the Mind documentary was the fact that how we perceive our bodies is a construct of the brain. The phenomena of the phantom arm in the documentary gave me a deeper understanding of the phantom limbs and more specifically, how people with amputated limbs feel pain in their amputated limb. The fact that amputees have the same brain activity as people who have all limbs is quite interesting. The documentary revealed that the part of the brain that is concerned with sensation and movement still stores this information long after the arm has been amputated, creating the perception that the hand still exists.
