Among the various theoretical orientations, behavioral therapy was the most resonate approach to me. This reflection is confined to aspects related to behavioral therapy and its role in behavior change. The approach is very inclusive and integrates the client in their treatment and planning of their goals. Behavioral theory is crucial to the client’s beliefs, values, thoughts and ideas, overall attitude, and the attributions that are an influence on their feelings, thereby mediating the relation between the antecedent events and behavior (Dagenais & Haldeman, 2011, p. 286). Behavioral theory, where cognitive behavioral therapy originates, was my best choice for various reasons.
It is interesting to understand how our thoughts influence some behaviors in school and at home. For instance, a classmate may assume he is not as good as his peers in a subject area and avoid answering questions in that class. A counselor using behavioral therapy will try to identify and contest the student’s maladaptive way of thinking in order to learn the behaviors that are attributing to the problem. It is common to have such illogical thoughts not only in school but also in other areas and even preventing ourselves from reaching full potential. Maladaptive thinking hinders individuals from adjusting properly and creates social problems.
Social problems are typical of countless individuals. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is diverse and covers various fields stretching from drug abuse to health-related contexts.
