In the first video, Bicchieri distinguishes social interdependence and social independence by considering collective practices and whether there are social motivations behind their behavior. The speaker confirms the definition of the two terms using the example of people choosing to use umbrellas when it is raining whether they make decisions without considering other people’s actions as they make independent decisions. When people’s actions are not motivated by other people, their actions are independent of other people’s actions. Evaluating what motivates and influences collective practices provides insights into independent and interdependent behavior (1.1). Interdependent behaviors are closely linked with conventions and social norms, including norms of reciprocity rules (Bicchieri, 2016).
Social interdependence exists when one person’s behaviors, performances, or results are linked and can be affected by the actions of another. This concept differs from dependency since the interdependent relationship implies that all participants are emotionally, financially, and morally independent.
