In this homework assignment, you will write about your life from your present age up to, and including, your death.  Changes in your physical health are the focus of this assignment. The paper is not entirely fictional - it should draw upon the scientific literature that may be relevant to the trajectories you imagine for your future life.

  • If you have a physical health condition and find it painful to write about the ways that will affect your life moving forward, please feel free to make up a fictional health trajectory (as long as the impacts you describe are grounded in research).
  • Please review the Sample Life Trajectory posted in Canvas to get an idea of how you should describe your own life trajectory.

Objective: You are to write about your health trajectory from your current age (or younger) and describe how aspects of this trajectory change or remain stable across your adulthood. 

  1. Describe how health status, family histories of disease, and health behaviors influence each individual’s health trajectory and longevity. Include these factors as you map out your own health trajectory. 
    1. Draw on material from the textbook to explain these factors.
  2. Describe your current health.  Do you have any health issues that might affect your long-term health outcomes?  Does your social status (e.g., ethnicity, gender, education, socioeconomic status) make you susceptible to any type of illness? Have you been exposed to environmental toxins?
  3. Describe any diseases that run in your family.  Talk to someone in your family about your medical family history. Does your family history put you at risk for changes in your health trajectory?
  4. How are your health behavior habits?  Are you a couch potato, a moderate exerciser, or an elite athlete?  If you are a football player or gymnast, what are your chances of developing severe musculoskeletal problems in midlife?   Does your physical activity (e.g., dancing, wrestling) put you at risk for eating disorders?   What are the probable long-term effects of your patterns of consumption of food, alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs?  Do you do anything to mitigate risk factors in your background? 
  5. Please note that you must have a specific and plausible cause of death (NOT just dying in your sleep, which will result in an automatic 5 point deduction). I understand that this might be a difficult subject for some individuals, so choose something that you can comfortably discuss. Try to keep in mind that this is an exercise in applying the knowledge gained through this course and nothing more.
  6. Find two scientific journal articles (1 journal article and 1 government website are acceptable) to help you obtain research-based information about your health issues.
  7. Use these articles, your observations, and your imagination to describe your health trajectory.

Factors that Influence Health Trajectory and Longevity
Over the past few years, health trajectory and longevity has increased because of medical advances and improvement in lifestyles. The average life expectancy has increased, and people can be able to live up to their old age. In the United States, the life expectancy of a person is about 84 years of age. A health trajectory is used to define the dynamic course of health and illnesses. Various factors influence health trajectory and longevity. Some of these factors include social factors, health status, health behaviours, history of the disease in a family, and physical exercises.
Consequently, social determinants of health like community factors, physical environment, and economic stability can also impact the life expectancy of people and their overall well-being. Thus health trajectory is used to describe the change in health status over time (Yashin, Wu, Arbeeva, Arbeev, Kulminski, Akushevich, & Ukraintseva, 2015). Health behaviors can also affect one's health trajectory. Some behavior like excessive use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, motor vehicle safety, use of tobacco, and inadequate exercises does influence the health trajectory and longevity of an individual. A healthy lifestyle will always increase the life expectancy of a person.
Family history of the disease is another factor that influences the life trajectory and longevity of an individual. Studies indicate family has a significant influence on how likely one can stay healthy later in life. For example, the life span of family members holds a clue to how long their kids will live. Therefore the longevity of parents is connected to the health of their children. Knowing the age in which some relatives have died gives people information on diseases and death in the family. Family history is an essential risk factor for diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, suicide, kidney disease, stroke, Alzheimer, and cancer. Therefore the health trajectory and longevity of an individual can be influenced by environmental factors and genetics. Studies suggest that genetics accounts for 30% of a person's chance to survive at the age of 80.
Well, I can say that I am in pretty good physical condition. My physical health is excellent. I have do not have any health complications. However, I have specific health issues that might affect my long term health outcomes. Sometimes during winter, I suffer from pneumonia and influenza. I was born in New York City. During winter seasons, my health condition tends to deteriorate compared to summer seasons. Since I am not married, it becomes difficult for me to manage during these periods. Sometimes I can find myself spending the weekend alone without any company of friends or relatives. Some of these factors make it difficult for me to adopt healthy habits and choices. It becomes hard to visit a doctor regularly to get my medication.
My social status, like gender and ethnicity, also makes me susceptible to some illnesses. Studies indicate that women live longer than men. This is because men tend to take part in risky behaviors which might cause death and accidents. Soc...
