Explain the role of the shadow in Jung’s thinking about the personality. The shadow, and many other of Jung’s archetypes, can be found in pop culture. Think about some of your favorite fantasy or superhero movies and books. What is the best example you can come up with of a movie or book that depicts the hero struggling with his or her shadow? Describe their struggle. How did the hero resolve their struggle with the shadow? Can the shadow ever be beneficial to personality development? Explain your reasoning and find support for your viewpoint in the assigned articles.

The shadow refers to the aspects of a person that are deemed unacceptable by society. The shadow is inherent in everyone, and it is a part of the personality, but many are unaware of its existence. People hide their dark side from others and themselves, not realizing that it is critical for determining one’s identity and ability to form relationships (Matić, 2020).
J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series is an excellent example of a book that depicts a character’s struggle with his shadow. The main character, Harry Potter, is linked to Voldemort. Voldemort prevents Harry from progressing; he is more than just a villain or antagonist in the story. He represents the aspects of Harry’s personality that he dislikes and prevents him from being his true self. Voldemort and Harry have engaged in numerous battles. Voldemort attempted to kill Harry numerous times as well. Harry finally killed Voldemort (Rowling, 2019). Their battles lead to the same conclusion: Voldemort is Harry’s lower self and the unconscious dark side, and Harry has successfully faced and transformed his shadow.
