There has been an increasing interest among social scientists about the concepts of groups and group dynamics over the past decades. Groups represent formations of two or more people coming together for a given purpose to communicate, impact, and depend on each other. Gencer (2019) observes that in any given group, crowds exhibit shared norms and goals that make members feel they belong in a certain group. For many years, sociologists and organizational and social psychologists have studied small groups, including families, workgroups, or groups of friends, since they reflect society at large. While many psychologists have argued for the existence of groups, critiques have built claims that groups will cease to exist without a collection of individuals that form them. This paper discusses both positions and presents my position on group orientation vis-à-vis an individualistic orientation towards groups nature using psychological concepts and theories.
Scholars supporting the notion that groups exist have claimed that groups are real and can be perceived as mechanical entities. For instance, groups have existed stably over many centuries, and while people that play certain roles in groups may change, their roles will remain to survive for generations. Besides, even though roles may adapt and become transformed over time, the corpus as a whole is eternal (Dean, 2021). Groups exist in today’s societies and have remained stable because even if a select of people comprising them are imperfect, there will always be some individuals upholding the system and preserving it. Similarly, in a workplace setting, if an employee fails to report to work in the morning, there has to be some other worker who will be punctual as required based on company laws. These observations reflect the existence of groups that define the behaviors of people that form them.
