The Role of Emotions in Conflict Response

Please respond to the following students' post on "The Role of Emotions in Conflict"

After reading that statement from our textbook, it gave me a different perspective to why others respond a certain way during conflict. Of course, in most conflicts an individual will stick to their perspective, and disregard the others view on it. For example, when doing assignments in my college classes, I would work with a partner to review whether we got each question correct. When the assignments came back, I received a higher grade than my partner. This left them angry and frustrated at the professor by reasoning they did not grade fairly. However, as we were discussing the issue, my response was more positive, and supportive towards why our grades were different. In reality, if the roles were reversed, I would respond the same based of the professor not seeing the value in my assignment.
Additionally, there are many misconceptions with emotions during conflict. The major one is that emotions cannot be controlled and will get out of hand determined on the individual’s intention. In our textbook it explains that "emotions affect your behavior…sometimes you can stop yourself from acting in ways you will regret, but sometimes you cannot” (Fisher and Shapiro 2005, 11 as cited in Hocker et.al, 2022). However, with feelings they are a by-product of the emotions that arise during the conflict. It is difficult at times for people to express their feelings since they may have preconceived thoughts that keep them suppressed. When each person is able to be expressive it opens up to solving problems and finding clarity to the purpose of the conflict. Also, establishes the reason behind the feelings that are exposed when expectations are not met (afraid, confused, embarrassed, etc.). The importance of being able to be vulnerable with one’s feelings is needed to be incorporated in conflict.
