Conflict Styles
Conflicts often arise in a workplace or among individuals in a relationship. Individuals deploy conflict management strategies that can be categorized into one of the five styles proposed by Thomas Kilmann: Collaborating, competing, accommodating, compromising, and avoiding (Thomas, 2008). My conflict style is collaborative. Although every style has its benefits, I think the collaborative style tends to bear the most benefits and thus the most applicable conflict management style. Collaborative style brings together individuals in a conflict and requires them to work out their differences amicably. The outcomes in a relationship become bearable for both parties when a collaborative style is employed. Besides, the collaborative style sets the stage for amicable conflict management for any conflict that may arise in the future because it instills an element of empathy and respect for others. A key disadvantage is that you cannot arrive at a solution that means victory for every party; compromises have to be made.
