Conflict communication is a broad topic with multiple behavior studies from different parts of the world. It also includes the role of gender alongside culture in determining the approach of people in a conflict. Based on my cross-cultural research from the academic works of Hocker. Et. Al, Strachan, and Haider, I discovered that people are bordered by gender and culture to respond to a conflict in a society.
Gender has a fundamental role when people are taught to handle a conflict. How people understand themselves and how others perceive them impact conflict behavior (Hocker & Wilmot, 2021). In every society, people respond to conflicts in ways they understand their role on a gender basis. For example, in a patriarchal society, men are supposed to show authority and competitiveness when they fall into this situation. If they behave submissively, they are considered cowardly and below the honor to be called 'man' (Strachan & Haider, 2015). However, the women avoid conflicts and stay silent to pose one of the best character traits. If they attempt to cross their cultural and gender boundary, they lower their esteem in others’ eyes. Also, they are appreciated while having a relational rather than rational approach to these situations (Hocker & Wilmot, 2021). Even in western societies, where equality and social justice are the biggest social concerns, women behave to save their relations instead of asserting themselves in groups. Through imitation, which they develop by observation and communication, young boys and girls learn to behave during conflicts based on their gender in every society.
