Sex and gender play essential roles in shaping our interpersonal interactions, identities, societal institutions, and opportunities. It is tough to escape the influences of sex and gender in our daily lives. There is much societal anticipation related to gender effects; such expectations affect precisely how both women and men conduct themselves. Gender affects their attitudes, sexuality, and approaches. Social expectations are based on the belief that there are two groups of people, mainly men, and women, and that their different behaviors are based on their biological sex (Blakeman, 2020). The pressure of people to conform to societal gender norms can harm both men and women.
Regarding the assigned topics on the psychology of sex and gender reflections, gender norms should be eliminated because all people are equal regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. Gender norms lead to the marginalization of some people, mostly women. In several societies, women are expected to stay silent regarding matters related to sex and sexuality; this makes it hard for women to know more about risk reduction, and to negotiate for safe sex with their sexual partners, men make all the decisions affecting sexual relationships. (Kennedy, Bishu & Heckler, 2020) In most societies, women are required to maintain virginity until they are married; when these women contract sexually transmitted diseases, it becomes hard to seek treatment because of the stigma faced within the healthcare centers.
Transgender people in our society face many challenges; they face discrimination, systematic inequality, and stigma. Some of the transgender community’s challenges are lack of legal protection, high levels of poverty, violence, stigma, discrimination, harassment, lack of healthcare insurance, and difficult procedures to obtain identity documents.
