Gender dysphoria is associated with several psychological issues. These issues, as revealed by the AACAP Official Action (2012), are similar to those experienced by homosexual youths. They include behavioral problems such as anxiety and depression. Also, individuals with gender dysphoria are at a higher risk of suicide. These issues stem from the stigmatization, rejection, or fear of rejection by family and friends and bullying, among others (AACAP Official Action, 2012).
A comprehensive assessment is necessary for addressing gender dysphoria and should take at least six months and a minimum of four sessions (Butler, Graaf, Wren, & Carmichael, 2018). The most effective assessment measure is one that focuses on in-depth conversational inquiry. As indicated by the AACAP Official Action (2012), engaging the individuals in a conversation where they answer questions about their sexual experiences and feelings in a non-judgmental manner helps in providing clarity about the individuals’ sexuality. Such an assessment approach would ensure that the specific needs of each individual are identified and met throughout the patient-physician interaction.
