Gender Inequality in China and India
Gender inequality affects people’s experience in the sense that men and women are perceived as not to be equal. This inequality is brought about by cultural, biological, and psychological norms. Gender inequality in society can also result from lack of employment equality, uneven access to education, job segregation, lack of political representation, poor medical care, lack of bodily autonomy, and societal mindsets. There are several publications that speak about the issue of gender inequality in China and India. These publications will be discussed below.
China Women Battling Tradition
In the article written by Kelly, China women still battling tradition, 70 years after independence, several gender inequality issues are highlighted. The articles begin with the birth of a girl named Zhang Nuannuan. The relatives expect the baby was to be a boy before she was born because she kicked with force inside her mother’s womb. The father was so angry when he found out that the baby was a girl, as stated by Kelly Dawson (2019). This already denotes that female children in the Chinese community are not valued as male children. Zhang Nuannuan is not welcomed by her relatives, even by her own father. The father did not like the girl until Zhang showed unique traits. Zhang was intelligent, funny, and had various capabilities.
The article also talks about Zhao Yilin, who had applied for a job in a particular company in Beijing. Zhao was denied the job because she said she was planning to have kids in the next few years. The interviewing managers discriminated Zhao against her gender. In given research carried out in 2017, 54% of Chinese women have been found to have similar experiences in job interviews. The article further states that gender discrimination was rampant in the same year for women aged between 25 and 35 years. Kelly Dawson also states that women retire 10 years earlier than men in some companies, which is still gender discrimination (2019).
