Applying Psychology to Everyday Life: A Reflection
The study of psychology revolves around our brains, behavior, environment, and the people around us. These interconnected aspects define our lives and decisions we make daily. The American Psychological Association (n.d) mentions that there are various areas of study focusing on subsections of psychology to illuminate our paths. After studies, the application of experiences gathered in school spreads to personal lives, careers, education, among other areas. Studies have shown that people have different experiences as students and later as they apply the knowledge gathered from psychology. To understand this, a self-reflection is here to elaborate on how I will use psychology in my personal life, profession, and academic areas, with a conclusion on the overlap within these three areas.
Psychology in Personal Life
One of the new and novel elements of psychology includes motivation. Most times, our minds wander depending on our desires and factors influencing our daily lives. We have goals and challenges to overcome. The best way to do so is to work hard and remain steadfast in our plans. In psychology, motivation is a factor that allows us to think of both the negative and positive aspects of life. According to Simpson and Balsam (2016), motivation spurs up our energy to pursue specific goals. Concentrating on positive thoughts encourage me to work harder towards achieving my goals. According to Robbins (2011), cognitive psychology relates close to the decisions we make daily. Once I am motivated, the choices I make should rhyme with the goals I have. Decision-making classes equipped me with the aspects of critical thinking, that guide me to evaluate situations depending on the expected results. I am sure the decisions I will make will be the right with excellent results and spur my development.
In all aspects of life, I will be a leader at some point. I may also be led. Good leaders are people who understand the individuals around them. Psychology plays a role in understanding juniors or seniors; knowing how they think, work, decide or handle disagreements to improve interpersonal relations. Group psychology plays a role in this by learning to find out the emotional feelings of others and learning to accommodate them. I will also be able to work on my emotions to improve these relations.
