I agree with my colleague that narrative family therapy entails separating an individual from his or her problems. In particular, life experiences form personal stories, which shape one’s identity (Suddeath, Kerwin, & Dugger, 2017). Narrative therapy ensures that individuals discover their purpose in life and can re-author their personal stories to ensure that they change their behaviors accordingly.
Mr. CK, a 30-year-old male, was diagnosed with mild intellectual disability, cocaine use disorder, and schizoaffective disorder. Despite undergoing family therapy for over a year, he has not improved his behavior, which is affecting his relationship with his mother and father adversely. Mr. CK’s aggressive behaviors are what prohibits him from returning home. From my experience in narrative family therapy, the client should first accept that he or she has problems that need to be addressed. From that point, the individual should do everything to ensure that he or she overcomes these issues.
In the beginning, Mr. CK agreed that he needs to change his behavior and be accommodating, particularly to his parents. However, the individual has failed in trying to identify his triggers...
